**
Nearly a whole moon ago
I lazed beneath a crystal blue
And above a glittering shimmering
One reflected in the other
As it came to be the same with me
Memory waltzed with thought
In a seamless dance of spirit
Three quarter time
In tune with the breeze
And with me
Once
Twice
And three times again
A butterfly
Appeared to the right of me
A monarch surprise
Wherever he came from
I know not
Which doesnโt matter much anyway
It is only special
That he found me
At the heart of a special day
Once
Twice
And three times again
I was mesmerized
So out of place he was
Suspended between blue and blue
With no field and no flowers
Anywhere in sight
Leading me gently to ask why
Once
And twice
And three times again
As the wheel of life does turn
Upon itself
So did he
To me
His wings sang of sunset
A feast of a thousand peaches
Ripened in an evening sky
He did not float in still air
Nor, did he fly strong and purposely
He was a winged mystery
Powerless
In the face of the invisible
Not fighting against the unseen
Instead, he let himself just be
And the wind came
And carried him
To all the places
He could never have imagined
For himself.
Then, ever so gracefully,
Once
Twice
And three times again
He fluttered near
And carried me there too…

there was a butterfly that day, a stunning peachy tangerine one. Out of place. Three times he came to me from nowhere, over the water, under the sky and out of the breeze.
A marvelous poem and so beautiful the idea.

It’s something about being “between” – about floating.
It’s become far more my home than any of the solid places – full of little white rooms where people call me in to fill out forms and steer me into some box or other, where my soul does not belong. Because this is how people so often see each other – as wingless things that need to jump through hoops, earn their place in the world.
There is something about transition places, where one thing rolls into another, leaving you in a place that is neither –
leaving you floating.
It’s like the shoreline, where the tide burrows its secret cargo of ocean things beneath your feet. I have sought refuge in this place more often than I can remember, rebuilding myself in the tapestry of ripples, allowing the rhythm of crunch and splash to weave into my heart and stitch back what the day had tried to erode from my spirit.
Sometimes this soaking time is sufficient. Sometimes it is enough to reset the meaning of John to this tidal metronome. Sometimes, however, the restlessness carries me further, and I find myself lost in that strange โbetweenโ place where no destination seems to fit.
One phrase that has has bubbled up to the surface more than a few times of late is โthe fence at the edge of my worldโ โ so much so that it became the title of a collection. It’s an odd mix of places all at once, where tough memories, vague hopes and current frustrations catch each other like those breezes. It’s a dark, midnight kind of fence… a place for me to go when everything else has closed for the day, daring me to brave the splinters and feel something beyond.
And it’s my floating place, where I can pause between all the solid things that don’t fit.

yes, there is something about being in the between places.
I find them to be full with emptiness and as such..possibilities. Sometimes you can be very quiet in them and regain something that might have been lost to a too busy world. There are many such places though you might have to search carefully for the right ones for you.
โThe fence at the edge of my worldโ – I like that very much. It would be such a place of betweenness and yes, it sounds as though splinters may be part and parcel of settling there for a time. Of course we always ask the question…what of the splinters and the pain of them. For me at least, the between places soften them all somehow and Iโm awfully grateful for that.
Thank you kindly for taking time to share so much. Your words are full of thought and they wander as nicely as the wind itself. Do take care, suzanne ๐ท

Suzanne!!! I LOVE this!!! What a magical, most wonderful experience You had! A butterfly angel. And how beautifully You share it! This is one of my favorite descriptions of a sunset EVER:
A feast of a thousand peaches
Ripened in an evening sky
Probably just the Georgia girl in me. ๐ Truly lovely. Thank You for starting my day off so dreamily. We have many Monarchs around here (could it be all the milkweed we’ve planted?!!) and now when I see them You and Your mysterious, out-of-place friend will be part of the joy of it all! I hope You have a wonderful day!!! Huge hugs Your way! ๐ค๐๐ฆ๐๐

Morning Katy! ๐ฆ it was just like that. He kept floating from out of nowhere, across the water. Quite magical! I have a butterfly bush but I should try milkweed. I donโt see it much around here. I shall look harder! ๐ Your thoughts are always so generous and have me smiling from the inside out. ๐ Georgia! I havenโt been there but I think of it as a gentle beautiful place. Welcoming and kind. Iโm not at all surprised to learn you are from there! A Georgia peach ๐ฅฐ Enormous thanks and wonders everywhere to You!!! Hugs received and returned! ๐ฆ๐๐๐ค

Good Morning, Suzanne! Magical, indeed! Once in a blue moon when we are out in the ocean boogy boarding….hanging out waiting for a wave to come, a random butterfly will come hang out and then sail off over the waves. They are yellow, called Cloudless Sulphers. Your story reminded me of them. It’s the most peculiar, WONDERFUL experience when they so oddly turn up! ๐And YES! Plant some milkweed. You’ll flip! They spread like crazy but are easy to manage and soooo very lovley. We had friends gift about 5 baby plants from their yard and WOW! Now we have more than we can count. There are a TON of Monarchs and we get to see their entire life cycle! The Monarch’s crysallis is insanely beautiful. Shiny kelly green, smooth with a line of shimmering gold dots around the top. Oh! If we were neighbors I’d run You over some plants! ๐I can’t remember where You live but it looks very similar to here in many ways! Georgia is truly beautiful…as is Your home. I love the photos You post. Your woods are glorious. Thank You so much for Your sweet wish:
wonders everywhere to You!!!
Right back at You!!! And Your hugs are received and returned as well! A hug circle across many miles. Thank You for starting my day with such joy! Yay!!! Cheers! ๐ค๐ฆ๐๐๐

That sounds absolutely magical Katy! Have you ever painted it? I can just imagine the way you would with your lovely cheerful colors. Now Iโm more determined than ever to find some milkweed! You, would be a wonderful neighbor to have nearby! I would try very hard not to bug you when you were painting though. ๐ Thereโs a wonderful little plant nursery that specializes in native and local plantings. She might have some. I live in east Texas! And yes, I do love it here. I will admit Iโm very blessed to have woods so close by. I canโt ever recall a time when I didnโt love trees ๐. Itโs so very nice to hear from you. The sun has come out after five days hidden and Iโm so enjoying it. Huge hug circle round to You!!! ๐คโค๏ธ๐ฅฐ๐๐

Yay! I am so happy the sun is out! Isn’t that just the absolute BEST after days of none?!! I don’t see how people in places where sometime’s there’s no sun for months do it. I’d lose my mind! And You know, I never have even thought about painting that! It would be lovely. I do have a large butterfly, Monarch!!!!, in one of the paintings I’m playing with now though. He’s pretty cool! I’m excited to share it when it’s finished. You’d be a superfantastic…and yes I’m gonna go there…bubbleelastic neighbor as well!!! I had You living in the Carolinas or Virginia in my mind for some reason! Texas. Wow. Very cool. Never would have pictured it like that! Truly beautiful!!! I bet that nursery would have milkweed! If not, there used to be Monarch societies online that would mail out free milkweed seed packets. Maybe there still are?!!! It’s nice to hear from You as well! Thank You. I see Your hug and I raise You a big fat smile to boot!!! ๐ค๐ฆโค๏ธ๐๐
